Where an existing document enters
Rule for every pass: ask for marked changes and accept each one yourself.
Choosing an editor matters less than knowing which stage you are in, because each stage fails differently. Each card gives the job, how an existing document uses it, what to look for in a model, and a prompt you can paste. To compare models on a pass, run the same prompt on two of them from the models list and keep the output closest to your original.
Diverge: angles, structures, counter-points.
For a document you already have, ask for a reverse outline: one line per section saying what it is for.

Cut, restructure, fix the logic.
This is the pass most existing documents need. Ask for marked changes with a reason on each one, then accept or reject them yourself.

Adversarial review: what is weak, where would a skeptic push back.
Read-only. Ask for questions and flaws, never for a rewritten version.

A good pass hands you a ledger: each change, its reason, and a decision you can overrule. Below is a worked example of that format.

An edit pass should never add a claim. Reject and tighten the prompt.

Voice drift is the quiet cost of AI editing: your prose slowly becomes the model's house style. The fix has two parts. Anchor your voice with a sample paragraph before the model touches anything, and edit in passes, logic first and language last, so you can see whether a change altered what you said or only how you said it.

The decision is less about brands than about where the AI sits relative to your file. ZeroTwo publishes this page, so read the middle card with that in mind; the other two are described from the vendor or not at all.
Microsoft's help page for Copilot in Word describes drafting from a prompt or reference files, editing in place, rewriting selected text, starting from a template or an existing document, and generating content with citations. It needs an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription and/or Copilot license, and model choice depends on subscription and availability.
Trade-off
The file stays where you already review and share. You work with whichever models the vendor exposes.

Trade-off
Good for comparing two models on the same pass. The Canvas page documents export as images and PDFs and does not describe Word-style tracked changes, so keep your original and compare.

Run the preservation checklist below on your own file and read each vendor's current page for plans and limits.
Our rule of thumb, not a measured result: a short edit inside a document your team already reviews in Word stays in Word. A long document where you want to compare two models on the same pass is easier in chat. Either way, move the final text to the place where comments and version history live.
Take a copy of a real two or three page document with headings, a table and a citation. Run one cut-only pass in the editor you are evaluating, then go down this list before you accept anything. You decide pass or fail; we have not run it for you.
Pass if: Heading levels and their order are the same as the original.
Pass if: Every row, column and figure is still there, and the table is still a table.
Pass if: Each source is still attached to the sentence it supported.
Pass if: Reviewer comments survive, or you know exactly which ones were lost.
Pass if: Search for each figure, date and proper noun in the edited copy. Every one matches.
Pass if: Read the edited text next to your sample paragraph. You would sign both.

It is software that applies an AI model to text you already have: rewrite, shorten, restructure or critique it. The useful distinction is not the brand but whether the tool sees the whole document, shows what it changed, and lets you reject a change.
Constrain the pass. Ask for deletions and shortening only, ask for a one-line reason on each change, and forbid new claims. Then check every figure, date and name against the original before you accept anything. Edit in passes, logic first and language last, so you can see which pass changed what.
Give the model 80 to 150 words of your own writing as a voice sample and a short list of rules before it touches your text. If the result reads smoother than your sample, ask for one more pass that restores the cadence of the sample without improving it.

In our view, not for review and distribution. Word and Docs are where comments, version history and sharing already live, so a common pattern is to edit with AI first and move the final text back. That is a judgment about workflow, not a measured result.
There is no blanket yes. Check which plan the account is on, whether training on your content is excluded in that vendor's written terms, and whether your organization allows it.
