Which AI gives you a Word file you can actually use?

Several tools can now produce a .docx. The harder question is whether the headings, tables, page breaks and citations survive the trip. Below: what each vendor documents, a test to run on your own brief, and where ZeroTwo fits and where it does not. The short answer

If all you need is a .docx that opens in Word, more than one tool can do it. What separates them is where the file is made (inside Word or from a chat), how much formatting you rebuild by hand, and whether you can choose the model. How each tool gets you a Word file

Each row paraphrases the vendor's own help page, linked in the last column and read in October 2026. Availability changes by plan and over time, so confirm on the linked page before you decide. No prices are quoted for other vendors.

Correction

An earlier version of this page said Claude and ChatGPT cannot produce a downloadable .docx. Claude's own help center lists Word documents among the files it creates, so that claim has been removed, along with the High and Low fidelity labels, which had no test behind them.

Run the same brief through any tool

We have not published sample files or scores, because we have not run this test for every tool. Here is the method so you can, in about ten minutes per tool.

  1. Fix the brief

    Use the same brief for every tool. Copy the test brief shown beside these steps, or write your own, but keep a table, a numbered list, a page break and two footnotes in it.

  2. Run it unchanged

    Do not tune the prompt per tool. Otherwise you are testing your prompting, not the export.

  3. Revise before you export

    Fix the content in chat first, so you export once. For a method that keeps your meaning and voice during revision, see revise the document before exporting.

  4. Export as .docx

    Use the tool's own download or save option. Write down the plan you were on and the date, because both change what is available.

  5. Open in Word and inspect

    Go through the eight checks below and record Pass, Partial or Fail for each. Keep the files so you can compare tools side by side.

Test brief: copy into every tool

Write a two-page brief for a fictional company, Northwind Cafe, about moving to a new opening-hours schedule.

Requirements:
- A title, then Heading 1 sections: Summary, Options, Recommendation.
- Under Options, a table with three columns: Option, Cost note, Risk.
- A numbered list of five next steps.
- A page break before Recommendation.
- Two footnotes and a short Sources list. If you cannot verify a source, write UNVERIFIED instead of inventing one.

Northwind Cafe is fictional. The UNVERIFIED rule matters: AI tools can invent sources.

Eight things to inspect in Word

Open each exported file in desktop Word and go down this list. The pass condition is what a reviewer would expect to see, not a score we computed.

  • Real heading styles

    How to check

    View, then Navigation Pane. Real headings appear in the outline; bold text made to look like a heading does not.

    Pass if

    Title and all three sections are listed.

  • Styles, not manual formatting

    How to check

    Click a paragraph and read the Styles gallery on the Home tab.

    Pass if

    Body text uses one style rather than a different font on every line.

  • A real table

    How to check

    Click inside it. Table Design and Layout tabs should appear.

    Pass if

    Three columns, header row intact, no tab-aligned text pretending to be a table.

  • List numbering

    How to check

    Click the list and add an item.

    Pass if

    Numbering continues by itself; the numbers are not typed text.

  • Page break

    How to check

    Turn on the paragraph mark button on the Home tab.

    Pass if

    A Page Break marker sits before Recommendation.

  • Footnotes

    How to check

    Click a footnote number.

    Pass if

    It jumps to a note at the bottom of the page, and numbers update if you insert another.

  • Citations you can open

    How to check

    Open every link and check every figure against its source.

    Pass if

    Each source exists and says what the text claims. Any UNVERIFIED mark was kept.

  • Opens cleanly

    How to check

    Open the file in desktop Word.

    Pass if

    No repair prompt and no Compatibility Mode banner in the title bar.

If your tool does not export .docx

Three fallbacks work with any tool. They differ in how much formatting you rebuild by hand.

  • Paste into Word

    Copy the text, paste with Keep Text Only, then apply Heading styles and build the table yourself. Slowest, and it works with any tool.

  • Go through Google Docs

    Export or paste into Google Docs, check the structure there, then download a Word copy from the Docs file menu.

  • Convert Markdown

    If the tool gives you Markdown, a converter such as Pandoc can turn it into a Word file. Headings and tables convert; page breaks and footnotes need checking.

What to check by document type

We do not name a best model per document type, because we have not tested that. What we can say is which failure to look for first. For drafting help see the AI writing assistant or the AI essay writer.

  • Business report

    Tables and page breaks survive, and every figure matches its source before it goes out.

  • Proposal

    The summary is first and the section order matches your template. If you have a Word template, a tool that can start from it saves restyling.

  • Contract or legal text

    Treat AI output as a draft for a lawyer to review. Ask for changes as marked edits so a human can see each one.

  • Academic paper

    Verify that every cited source exists, and check your institution's required style yourself. Footnotes are the usual casualty.

Who should pick what

Questions about AI and Word files

Can ChatGPT make Word documents?

OpenAI's help page for ChatGPT Work describes creating and editing documents from instructions, source files or a template, and a template can start from a Word file. It says availability depends on plan, workspace settings, file type and surface, so confirm that a downloadable .docx is offered on your account. If it is not, paste the text into Word and apply styles.

Can Claude create a .docx file?

Yes. Claude's help center lists Word documents (.docx) among the files it can create, and says you can download them or save them to Google Drive. File creation is described as available on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans and draws from your usage limits.

What AI creates DOCX files natively?

Several do. Copilot in Word works inside the Word document itself, and Claude creates .docx files from a chat according to its help center. The difference that matters is not whether a file appears but whether headings, tables, page breaks and citations survive, which is what the test on this page checks.

Is there a free AI for making Word documents?

Claude's help center lists file creation for Free plans. ZeroTwo has a Free plan (100 free credits to start, plus 20 bonus credits each day you log in), but we have not confirmed Word export from it; Deep research, with its docX download, is listed on Plus and above. Other vendors change their limits, so check their current pages.

How do I export an AI response to .docx?

If the tool offers a Word download, use it and then inspect the file in Word. If not, paste the text into Word with Keep Text Only and apply heading styles, export through Google Docs and download a Word copy, or convert Markdown with a converter such as Pandoc. Each route leaves a different amount of manual formatting work.

Is Microsoft Copilot better than ChatGPT for documents?

It depends where the document lives. Copilot works inside Word and can start from a template or an existing document, and Microsoft's page says it needs an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription and/or Copilot license; check Microsoft's current pricing page. We have not compared output quality between them, so we do not rank them.

Which AI model writes the best Word document content?
